School Mola Design Contest

Teacher Vicki Krantz bought a beautiful mola from me to teach her second grade art class at Norman Elementary School about the Kuna and their art of molas. She told me that she was going to ask the children to create their own Kuna art by cutting mola-inspired designs out of layers of construction paper. To add even more inspiration to the class, I donated a bunch of molas and molitas to her effort. Touched and delighted by the thank you notes I in turn received, I launched the challenge of a mola design contest their way...

The children were to come up with their very best mola designs and create them with colored paper. Their paper "molas" would be sent to the Kuna who would choose their favourite five designs. And, after choosing their favourite five designs, the Kuna would make real molas out of them.

Here, then, are the winning designs...

Here teacher Vicki Krantz is handing out the molas to the winners...

Here are the winners -- Allyson, Megan, Billy, Sabrina, and Meghan -- with their molas...

And here are the winning designs and molas...
